About the city

Kyoto is the city that kept its soul when the rest of Japan modernised. Fifteen hundred temples, a living craft tradition, and a food culture that has been refining itself for four centuries. The practitioners who know it best — the ceramicists, the food writers, the architectural historians — have spent years embedded in neighbourhoods that most visitors never find. Tramica connects you with them before you leave home.

The expert community

Kyoto's expert community is anchored in the craft and ceramics world — one of the last cities in Japan where traditional practitioners are still pushing their disciplines forward rather than producing for the tourist market. The food writing community is equally deep, connected to the wholesale markets and private dining rooms that don't appear on any booking platform. The contemporary art scene is small, serious, and entirely off the standard gallery circuit.

Best time to visit

March–April (cherry blossom) and October–November (autumn foliage) are the most celebrated seasons. November is Tramica's recommended month — the crowds have thinned from the peak, the light is extraordinary, and the ceramics community is most active after the summer exhibition season.

Tramica launched

November 2026 — our founding city. The expert community here shaped everything Tramica became.
