About the city

The expert community

Bangkok's expert community is one of the least visible and most rewarding in the Tramica network. The contemporary art community operates largely outside the commercial gallery system — in artist-run spaces in Charoenkrung and the riverside precincts that have become the city's most interesting cultural neighbourhood. The culinary community includes a small number of practitioners working to document and preserve regional Thai cooking traditions that are disappearing from the Bangkok restaurant scene — writers and cooks with direct relationships to producers in the north and northeast. The textile and craft community maintains connections to royal workshop traditions that have no public profile but represent some of the most technically sophisticated practice in Southeast Asia.

Best time to visit

November–February is the dry season and the accepted best window — lower humidity, manageable temperatures, and the city's cultural programming at its most active. November is Tramica's recommended month — the rainy season has just ended, the riverside cultural precinct in Charoenkrung is at its most vibrant before the peak tourist months, and the culinary community is engaged with the northern harvest season, which directly influences the produce reaching Bangkok's specialist markets and the practitioners who work with them.
